Porcelain crowns help to restore a tooth when it is broken, decayed, or fractured. Today's porcelain crowns are strong, durable, and are an aesthetic match to your natural teeth. |
In the last 20 years or so, bonding technology has progressed to the point where dentists no longer need to create a metal framework in order to attach crowns to teeth.
There are several types of porcelain crowns
Your choice in crowns will most likely be determined by the location of the tooth that is to be crowned. The aesthetics of a crown are more important the closer it is to the front of your mouth.
All-porcelain crowns are extremely aesthetic because they match exactly the appearance of your natural teeth. They are a great choice for teeth that are near the front of your mouth and are featured prominently in your smile.
Porcelain fused to metal crowns are generally stronger than all-porcelain crowns and have a nearly natural appearance, subject to two limitations: Because they have a metal framework underneath, they require the use of an opaquer to cover the metal, which makes it impossible to fully re-create the translucency of natural teeth. Also, they may eventually show a dark line at the edge, next to the gum.
The increased strength that comes with porcelain fused to metal crowns is most needed in the teeth that are in the back of the mouth, where chewing forces are much more powerful.
